Edenderry seniors played their second game of the league campaign on Saturday afternoon and suffered a three point loss to Clara. Despite missing twenty of the thirty one players who togged out for the county final, the reds put up in a workmanlike effort and the management were delighted with the performance.
The game was lively from start to finish and with less than a minute gone Edenderry took the lead through a Brian Quinlan goal. Stephen Guing made a great solo run before laying the ball off to Paddy Lynch who's shot hit the uprights, but it fell to regular Edenderry goalkeeper Brian 'The Bomber' Quinlan who coolly slotted into the Clara net.
Clara responded just one minute later with a goal of their own when a mistake in the Edenderry defence allowed Joey Deehan in for a goal. Clara took the lead in the sixth minute from a Thomas Deehan free and it took until the fifteenth minute until Edenderry leveled and after some great play from Colm Byrne, Daniel Ryan, Padraig Foy and Diarmaid Meleady it was Paddy Lynch who sent the ball over the bar.
Stephen Guing put the reds in front in the eighteenth minute but two points in three minutes from Scott Brady and John Reynolds gave Clara back the edge. Stephen Guing put Edenderry back on level terms in the twenty fourth minute but three points in the remaining five of the half gave Clara a three point lead at half time.
Half time:
Edenderry 1-3 1-6 Clara
At half time Edenderry introduced three subs, Cian Lawton for Pat Moloney, Matthew O'Grady for Padraig Foy and Dean Cummins for Ciaran Cummins, with Brian Quinlan taking over his usual role between the sticks.
Within the first minute of the restart Joey Deehan stretched Clara's lead to four points from a free. In the seventh minute Ciaran Hurley reduced the deficit to three with a pointed free after a foul on Dean Cummins. Clara hit back with two scores in the tenth and eleventh minute and again Ciaran Hurley pointed from a free in the fourteenth minute.
Three minutes later Ciaran hurley hit his third of the game and in the twentieth minute Clara again took a four point lead. Edenderry introduced Mark Hoey for the injured Paddy Lynch and it paid dividends within seconds. Dean Cummins fielded a high ball in the danger zone and while been fouled he laid it off to Stephen Abbott who appeared to also be fouled but when they ball broke loose in the square it was Hoey who placed the ball in the back of the net.
Edenderry were now just trailing by one point but they failed to kick on from here and Clara showed their experience by kicking three points in seven minutes. In the thirtieth minute David Farrelly pointed after some great play from Dan Ryan to leave three between the sides at the full time whistle.
Edenderry management will be very pleased with this workout and considering there were twenty plus players unavailable it shows the strength in dept of the current set-up and the huge pool of players available.
On the day Edenderry were best served by half backs Colm Byrne and Paddy Lynch, with debutant Matthew O'Grady very impressive, while Stephen Guing was dominant at midfield.

Clarification for parents and players as to why Edenderry GAA will be declining the offer from Offaly Community Games to enter teams in its U10/11 competitions.
Firstly we wish to thank Offaly Community Games for the offer and wish them luck with all their activities in 2012. However, Edenderry Ladies Committee and Edenderry Bord na nÓg in conjunction with the Coaching and Games Committee in the Club have decided not to enter teams in the Community Games Competitions in 2012. Alternatively Edenderry GAA along with Offaly Coaching and Games will be providing a huge programme of games and skills competitions for its players at these age groups in 2012.
As per GAA rule (6.27 T.O 2012) games in Under 12 and Younger Age Groups shall be organised on the 'Go Games' model. Edenderry GAA must fully support this rule and in 2012 in conjunction with Offaly Coaching and Games will be implementing the 'Go Games' model as per the goals of our Strategic Plan.
The Go Games Model is defined by the following criteria:
There is full participation for all players
Games are small-sided
Playing rules are modified to suit the developmental stages of the children
Playing area is modified
Playing equipment is modified
The underlying philosophy where Go Games are concerned is one of full participation and fair play where each player gets to play the entire game (no subs where practical) and plays in a number of different playing positions during the course of each game. The games are small sided and the emphasis is on participation rather than the result. Go Games are not only about Fair Play in the sense that all participants should get the opportunity to participate fully in the games. They also revolve around the core values enshrined in the GAA Respect Initiative.
In our opinion the Community Games Competitions as currently stand are in conflict with this approach as the Community Games Competition games are based on;
Closed panel of 20 players - (Due to numbers playing at these age groups this leads to exclusion of some players)
Games are not small sided - (Does not allow for player development as some players have minimal involvement in games)
Games based on a must win knock-out competition - (Leads to a culture where 'keep the best and neglect the rest' develops)
While the origins of the competition may be well intentioned, there is no justification for placing adult-type demands on young children e.g. where winning is the over-riding concern, where they play 13 or 15-a-side games, on over sized pitches, and have minimal involvement in the game.
Edenderry GAA are pursuing a child centred approach to our games where its children first, winning second.
There will be a meeting for all coaches in the club next Wednesday where the programme for games in 2012 will be discussed. Following that meeting we will launch the season at an Open Evening for all parents and players (date to be announced). At the Open Evening the Go Games approach will be explained in more detail. In the meantime please check out the Go Games section of our website Go Games

Junior league:
Edenderry 1-8 1-12 Tullamore........
Edenderry juniors were beaten by four points on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the division three league. Despite a great start to the game, a poor second half performance allowed Tullamore to secure the two points.
Pat Moloney opened the scoring after three minutes after David Farrelly sent in a long ball which was won by Daniel Ryan who laid it off to Pat who sent it over the bar. Tullamore replied instantly with a pointed free but two minutes later Mark Hoey put the reds back in front. Edenderry dominated the next fifteen minutes and points from Sean Og Farrell, Pat Moloney and John Gorman(3) gave the home side a six point lead. In the twenty first minute Tullamore reduced the deficit to three points when they scored a goal. Goalkeeper Ciaran Cummins made a great save but could do nothing about the rebounded effort. Tullamore added a further two points in the twenty sixth and twenty eight minute to leave the minimum between the sides at half time.
Half time:
Edenderry 0-7 1-3 Tullamore
Edenderry introduced Martin Keogh and Michael Bryan at half time in place of Adrian Farrell and Daniel Ryan but it was the blues who started the stronger scoring two points and taking the lead in the opening five minutes. John Gorman pointed from a free after a foul on Michael Bryan in the seventh minute but again Tullamore hit back with two points and regained the lead. With thirteen minutes gone in the second half Edenderry were threw a huge lifeline when Dean Cummins shot was saved, John Gorman coolly slotted the ball to the back of the net. However Edenderry failed to kick on from here and Tullamore took full advantage kicking five points in the remaining twelve minutes for a deserved four point win.
Man of the match: John Gorman (1-4)
Team Sheet:
Ciaran Cummins, Stephen Abbott, Johnny Blong, Padraig Foy, Stephen Murphy, David Farrelly, Colin McNamara, Cian Lawton, Sean Og Farrell(0-1), Paddy Lynch, Pat Moloney(0-2), Adrian Farrell, Dan Ryan, Mark Hoey(0-1), John Gorman(1-4)
